How to Install an eSIM in Under 5 Minutes (Complete Guide)

Installing an eSIM takes less time than finding your passport in your carry-on. No plastic cards, no airport kiosks, no waiting three days for delivery. Just scan a QR code and you’re connected.

Here’s exactly how to install an eSIM on your device, step by step.

Check Your Device Compatibility First

Not all phones support eSIM technology. Most devices from 2019 onwards do, but it’s worth checking before you buy a plan.

For iPhone users: You need an iPhone XS or newer. Go to Settings > General > About and look for “Digital SIM” or check if you have a “Cellular Plans” option in Settings > Cellular.

Android users have more variation. Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer work. Google Pixel 3 and up. Most flagship phones from 2020 onwards include eSIM support. The easiest check: look for “Add eSIM” or “Add Carrier” in your mobile network settings.

Your phone also needs to be unlocked. Carrier-locked devices won’t accept eSIM plans from other providers.

The Actual Installation Process

Once you’ve bought your eSIM plan, you’ll get a QR code via email. This code contains all the network settings your phone needs.

On iPhone:

  • Open Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan
  • Point your camera at the QR code
  • Tap “Add Cellular Plan” when prompted
  • Label your plan (like “Travel” or “Oatfish”)
  • Choose which line to use for data

On Android (varies by manufacturer):

  • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network
  • Tap “Add Carrier” or the + symbol
  • Select “Don’t have a SIM card?” or “Add using QR code”
  • Scan your QR code
  • Follow the setup prompts

The whole process takes 2-3 minutes. Your phone will download the eSIM profile and activate it automatically.

What Happens After Installation

Your eSIM installs immediately, but it won’t connect until you reach your destination country. This is actually useful – you can install it before you travel and activate it the moment you land.

Once activated, your eSIM works exactly like a regular SIM card. Full speed data, no throttling, and you can share your connection as a hotspot with other devices. Your original number stays active for calls and texts (on dual-SIM devices).

Most eSIM plans start counting days from first use, not from installation. Install yours a week early if you want – the clock doesn’t start ticking until you connect to a network in your destination.

Troubleshooting Common Installation Issues

QR code won’t scan? Check your camera permissions and try better lighting. You can also enter the activation details manually – look for “Enter Details Manually” during setup.

“Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change” error on iPhone usually means your device is carrier-locked. Contact your current carrier to unlock it.

No signal after installation? Make sure you’ve selected the eSIM for mobile data in your cellular settings. Also check that data roaming is enabled for the eSIM profile.

Some devices limit how many eSIM profiles you can store. iPhones hold 8-20 profiles (depending on model) but only one can be active alongside your physical SIM. Delete old unused profiles to make space.

Android devices vary wildly. Samsung phones typically store 5-10 profiles. Google Pixels handle 4-8. Check your specific model if you’re hitting limits.

Skip the Roaming Fee Shock

Installing an eSIM beats paying $10-15 per day in roaming fees. We offer plans starting at $4 for short trips, with full-speed data and hotspot sharing included. No plastic waste, no airport queues, no bill shock when you get home.
